One problem facing those visiting the Bras d'Or Lakes is: Where can I get ashore?

Most of the shoreline around the Lakes is privately owned, so there are only a few places that are accessible by dinghy, for cruisers to get ashore to stretch their legs, without treading on private land.

Local boaters have for decades taken advantage of private foreshores, perhaps believing that they open to the public; one often sees crowds ashore on the Crammond Islands, even though they are privately owned.

One day land gets sold, usually to off-island owners who don't understand our Cape Breton ways, and the new owners put up 'keep off' signs or arrive with a shotguns under their arms and tell boaters to "Get off our property!"

I'd like to compile a list of landing places, other than public wharves and launch ramps, so that the information can be put on the charts, and perhaps a webpage for the benefit of visiting and local cruisers. One place that we've used, for example, is the little causeway at the head of Cribwork Cove in Big Harbour/Malagawatch that connects Big Harbour Island to the 'mainland'. It's easy to get ashore there and it's right on the road. There must be many places I'm unaware of.

Comments, please, on this idea and suggested landing places should be submitted under this thread.

I would definitely recommend this quiet spot. Thanks to this website for all of the chartlets. We have come across many cruisers this summer and have heard they are using 25 year old guide books etc. I always tell them to check out your site. Thanks again.

Hi All,

Several Cape Breton websites I visited recently claim that Lake Bras d'Or is "Canada's Largest Inland Sea".
Yet in the article titled "Ultimate Cruising Destination" your site seems to refute this claim, saying, "...it is by no stretch of the imagination "Canada's Largest inland Sea"—neither salt nor fresh—as some would have you believe...", but you don't say what is.

What's the truth, here?

Tom and I live in New York City and will be vacationing in Cape Breton the last 2 weeks in August. We are looking to bareboat charter for a week during that time.

We have much bareboating experience on 40- to 45-foot mono hulls, including: St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Antigua, Spanish Virgin Islands. In addition, I am an ASA certified sailing instructor and we've sailing in the New York harbor for 15 years on J24s.

We appreciate any help you can offer locating a boat for us to charter. Hope to meet some of you while we're there!

Hi, all. I stumbled across your fabulous web site and want to thank all involved for sharing such great info. We have lived in FL for 10 years now and this coming April we plan to start the first half of the Great Loop to Lake Ontario, and then make the Down East Circle before wintering the boat near Lake Ontario.

We are looking forward to seeing so many new places and experiencing different cultures along the way. We expect one of the highlights to be Cape Breton. Given that we will have just under 4 months on the Down East Circle portion to make our way about 3,000 statute miles (about 4,800 km), we cannot stay long in any one area.

So, once inside Bras d'Or Lakes via St. Peters lock/canal, what highly recommended stops can you offer? We will be switching from sail to power before the trip, so 5 hours at 12 kts will be an easy day for us. We enjoy a mix of anchoring out as well as visiting ashore (via dinghy or a marina stay, if recommended). I have access to much information about various places, but that is not quite the same as a local advising which ones are on the "must visit" list.

Thanks so much.

I sailed to Long Island, CB this year with a few friends who had very little to no sailing experience. We were on a Catalina 320, wind was from the SW gusting to about 20. Plan was to tuck in behind the sandbar at the south entrance for the night. I was never there before and was relying on info I had from others and from the info on the CCB site. Problem is that I couldn't get the anchor to hold. I found it to be a bit of a tight spot and with the wind blowing was worried that I was going to end up on the beach sometime through the night. Usually I'm sailing with my wife, who wasn't with us on this trip, and she is excellent at the helm when anchoring. Long and short is that we pulled out and went to plan B. I wasn't sure if we simply didn't have enough anchoring experience on board or if this area simply isn't a good spot to hold in that kind of wind. Any other experiences would be appreciated.
