In 1989/90, Environment Canada published the East Coast Marine Weather Manual which provided excellent explanations of how Near-shore Waters Winds are affected locally by the land. As far as is known it is no longer published, but if you can lay your hands on a copy, grab it! It will go a long way in explaining why the winds you experience were not in the forecast.
It was published in both official languages. The English version's ISBN is 0-662-16934-4.
